Rabbits are delightful pets that can bring lots of joy to your home. However, they require proper care and attention to ensure they stay healthy and happy. From creating a suitable living space to providing the right diet and companionship, here’s everything you need to know about looking after rabbits.

1. Provide a Safe Living Environment

Rabbits need a secure and spacious living area where they can move freely. Whether indoors or outdoors, their enclosure should include a cosy shelter for sleeping and protection from extreme weather. Outdoor hutches must be weatherproof and placed in a shaded area to avoid overheating. Indoors, rabbit-proofing your home is essential, as rabbits love to chew and may damage wires or furniture.

The enclosure should also have enough space for exercise, with access to a secure run or playpen. Rabbits are active animals that need room to hop, stretch, and explore.

2. A Balanced Diet

A rabbit’s diet should consist mainly of fresh hay, which helps maintain healthy teeth and digestion. Alongside hay, provide a daily portion of fresh vegetables like kale, spinach, or carrots, as well as a small quantity of high-quality rabbit pellets. Ensure fresh water is always available, either in a bowl or a water bottle.

Avoid feeding rabbits sugary treats or human food, as these can cause health issues.

3. Social Interaction and Enrichment

Rabbits are social animals that thrive on companionship. Ideally, keep rabbits in pairs or groups to prevent loneliness. If keeping a single rabbit, ensure you spend plenty of time interacting with them each day.

Provide enrichment activities like tunnels, chew toys, and safe areas to dig. These keep your rabbit mentally stimulated and prevent boredom.

4. Health and Grooming

Check your rabbit regularly for signs of illness, such as changes in eating habits, lethargy, or unusual behaviour. Ensure they’re vaccinated and treated for parasites, such as fleas or mites, as recommended by your vet. Grooming is essential, especially for long-haired breeds, to prevent matted fur.

Key Takeaways:

  • Rabbits need a spacious and secure living area with room for exercise.
  • A diet of fresh hay, vegetables, and water keeps them healthy.
  • Provide companionship and enrichment to support their social and mental well-being.
  • Regular health checks and grooming are essential for long-term care.

With the right care and attention, rabbits can live happy and healthy lives, making them wonderful companions for years to come.
