For the Bees and Birds

Sweet Briar is a vigorous arching, deciduous, semi-evergreen shrub, with prickly stems bearing apple-scented foliage. It has cupped single light pink flowers in the summer, which are followed by ovoid red fruits. It will grow best in full sun with fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Apply a balanced fertiliser and mulch in late Winter/early Spring for the best flowering. They are tolerant of poor soil and shade.

We recommend planting it on the south or west side of the garden, ensuring the fragrance will be bought into the garden on warm, moist winds. Suitable for all pH soils as well as all soil types (sandy, loamy, clay and chalk). It is valued for the scent it brings to any garden, as well as the lush red hips that persist well into the Winter.

Factfile:

  • Mature Height: 1.5m+
  • Mature Spread : 1.5m+
  • Growth Rate: Fast
  • Hardiness: H7
  • Position: Full Sun
  • Suitable for Clay, Loam or Sand and any pHs
