Oval Leaf Privet is one of Britain’s most popular hedging plants, a tough plant that copes well in most scenarios. While originally native to Japan, these are grown right here in the UK so that the plants are tough and hardy in our own climate.
Oval Leaf Privet is a fast-growing hedge that has a very dense habit, making it a fantastic choice for defensive hedging and privacy screening, as well as shelter for smaller birds. It’s a semi-evergreen, with foliage staying throughout most of winter except for when the weather is particularly severe.
The leaves themselves are a mid-green, with streaks of yellow across the underside. White flowers bloom in late spring or early summer, followed by deep black or purple berries.
Grown to be tough and resilient, they can tolerate a relatively hard clipping several times a year. They’re pretty quick growers, so they’ll need a bit of maintenance if you’re going for a more formal look, though they are less likely to flower the more they are pruned.
