A fantastic choice for country hedging, the wild looking Cherry Plum is popular thanks to its sweet fruit and easy growing nature.
They have a slightly wild growth habit but they make great country hedging as a result, with their large sheltering canopy and slightly thorny branches. Masses of pure white flowers swarm the branches early in the year. They work great for a bushy looking screening tree, that also has the added benefit of providing delicious fruits through the summer.
The fruits ripen in July and look a bit like a small plum, about an inch wide. The skins are usually dark red or purple, making for a lovely contrast of colour against the green foliage.
They’ll grow happily on any well-drained soils, and can reach up to 8 metres if left to grow freely as a tree. Coastal sites aren’t a problem, and they’re perfectly happy with exposed sites and partial shade.
